The Swale & Ure Drainage Board was formed on 1 April 2012 by the amalgamation of five smaller Boards being Bedale & Upper Swale, Cod Beck, Claro, Lower Swale and River Wiske.

The Board is an autonomous public body under the direct control of the Board members.  The Board has 11 elected members and 3 members appointed by Hambleton District Council, Harrogate Borough Council and Richmondshire District Council.  An election is held every 3 years.

The area of the Swale & Ure Drainage Board is 203.4km2 and maintains 470km of managed watercourses, serving over 1,200 drainage ratepayers in the Hambleton, Harrogate and Richmond council areas.  The Board is responsible for one pumping station at Maunby and manages over 70 water level management structures.

The Board’s offices are in Thirsk and Knaresborough.
