Tour of Inspection 2019

The Swale & Ure Drainage Board, being the most northerly Drainage Board in the United Kingdom, held its first Tour of Inspection on Friday 8 November 2019. Guests were invited from the Unitary Authorities together with NFU, CLA, EA, NYCC, YDRT, YWT and representatives from Internal Drainage Boards to the south. Also in attendance were the Chair of ADA, Mr Robert Caudwell, and the CEO, Mr Innes Thomson, along with Swale & Ure Board Members and Officers.

The Tour was convened at Thirsk Rural Business Centre (Cattle Market) whereupon registration and welcome took place prior to setting out to Northallerton, Leeming and Bedale Districts before returning to Thirsk along the A1 corridor. The Asset Manager, Mr Matthew Cooke, gave a continuous resume throughout the Tour of the operation of the Drainage Board, pointing out all relevant structures and the importance of this Drainage  Board to the protection of urban and agricultural land whilst keeping water off the main arterial roads being  the A1 and A19 and the main Edinburgh to London railway line.

Returning to Thirsk a reception was held and 35 guests were served lunch. An introduction took place by the Chair of the Swale & Ure Drainage Board, Mr Mark Sampson, when he welcomed those present and introduced the Chair of ADA.

The Chair of ADA gave his overview of the present status of the industry supported by his CEO. A question and answer forum ensued before the close of the Tour.
